Parish Pastoral Council-Minutes of Summer Meeting

ST. SIMON’S PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL.

Minutes of the Summer Meeting held on Monday, 7th June, 2010
at 7.03 p.m. in Café Simon.

1. J. Henderson welcomed everyone to the meeting and the Matthews Gospel of the day was read by Fr. Slavin and then Sister Mary recited the Prayer for Priests.

2. Present were: M. Burke, K. Drury, J. Henderson (Chair), N. Kelly, S. Lamb, L. McGurn, J. McShane, S. O’Donnell, G. Porter, B. Torsney, Sr. M. Ross, M. McCarron, Rev. W. Slavin & J. Kernaghan.
Apologies were received from: E. Kidd, M. Magennis, J. McCormick, J. Papamichail, and Rev. J. Lawlor.

3. Minutes of the Spring Meeting on 1st March were approved by M.Burke, seconded by K. Drury after amendment to include J. McShane & M. Magennis as present, not absent.

4. Café Simon. Trundling along, bus run for homeless to Largs by SVdP had just taken place. 4. Keynotes. To be sent out before the summer holidays. Should be edited before printing.

5. Pastoral Care. 1. Reminiscences Group. (Friendship Group) meeting every fortnight in Café Simon at 2.45 p.m. on Saturdays. Present project is knit a square for Africa. 2. The SVdP report was given by M. McCarron. Plodding along. 5. Education in Faith. B. Torsney the convenor gave the report.
1. 2009-10 Further Education in Faith Programme Report. Ambitious. 2 more meetings before summer break. 2. RCIA/RCIC. All the candidates have joined the congregations. 3. Ascent Group. Once a month meetings. Outing to Carfin on last Monday in June. 4. Ecumenism. As Partick 2000 has folded, this has been taken over by a group of clergy from all the local churches. 5. West End Festival. Fr. Lawlor has produced a booklet detailing all the activities to be held in both churches during the Festival.

6. Fabric & Finance. As J. McCormick was absent, G. Porter gave the report.
1. Expenditure to date. As per the accounts submitted to the Archdiocese. They have not yet processed the VAT reclaim from HMRC, so about £10K is outstanding.
2. Budget to date. On target.
3. Maintenance Programme. Draft of this has been sent to Historic Scotland for checking and their input. The Church floor has been cleaned and oiled. Father Slavin has finally given in to having the house redecorated. As he is going on holiday in July, this would be the ideal time to carry this out.

7. Conduct of Worship: Deacon Kernaghan will pass this group back to Feargal Dalton. 1. Sunday Mass Schedule. More Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, Power Point operators needed. 2. Daily Mass Schedule seems to be working. 3. Housebound in Overnewton is now only 2 needing Communion on second Sunday of month.

8. Polish Chaplaincy. We have requested a new representative, but Fr. Marian has indicated that as he considers the Polish Community are guests of the Parish, so no representative is required. We have identified a health and safety problem, which we can’t resolve, we will write to them informing them that they are responsible for any problems. We will also send a letter to the Archdiocesan Lawyers informing them of the problem.

9. Child & Persons at Risk Safeguarding: The Archdiocese had convened a joint training meeting on 2nd June in Café Simon. Sister Mary was thanked for organising this. The reference group meeting will be next week.

10. AOB. Mini retreat for both councils will hopefully be organised after the summer. Tickets for Martin Kane’s ordination & Phoenix Choir for West End Festival are available. The joint Parish Barbeque later in the month needs volunteers.

11. 2010 Meetings. These will be 6th September, 1st November (AGM) and 6th December.
This being all the business, the meeting finished with a Prayer by Fr. Slavin at 8.43pm.

After our ’summer ‘ break we shall resume our monthly meetings on Tuesday, 21 September, in the Cafe Simon at 1 pm (after 12.30 daily Mass). Further meetings are planned for the third Tuesday of each month, except during Advent and Lent when they are held weekly. Existing members are very welcome back, and we shall be delighted to meet anyone of ‘mature years’ who is interested. Our meeting usually finishes by 2 pm and takes the form of prayer and reflection, a little Ascent business info and of course the obligatory and welcome tea/coffee.
Do put September 21 in your diary or calendar and come along -you will be most welcome.

Tuesday, September 21 in the Cafe Simon (beside the church)
Come along to the Ascent meeting, at which we shall celebrate its FIVE YEARS in Glasgow, firstly as St Simon’s Group and more recently as the Simon Peter Group. You’re welcome to come and see what Ascent is about, and bring a friend too. All old and new members most welcome.
