Monthly meetings held in the Cafe Simon at 1 pm on the third Tuesday of the month.

A movement founded in France during

the 1950’s, Ascent is dedicated to fostering spirituality among people in the later years

Its meetings aim to offer friendship, prayer and the exercise of mission among older people.

OFFERING TO THE HOLY TRINITY

MOST Holy and Adorable Trinity, One God in Three Persons, I praise Thee
and give Thee thanks for all the favors Thou has bestowed upon me. Thy
goodness has preserved me until now, I offer Thee my whole being and
in particular, all my thoughts, words, and deeds, together with all the trials I may undergo this day. Give them Thy blessing. May Thy divine Love animate them
and may they serve Thy greater glory.

I make this morning offering in union with the Divine intentions of Jesus Christ
Who offers himself daily in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and in union with
Mary, His Virgin Mother and our Mother, who was always the faithful handmaid
of the Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. Amen.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead;
He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of God
the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church,
the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Helping the homeless

The fact you’re reading this part of the article, would suggest you’re just the kind of person needed!

CAFE SIMON is the back part of St Simon’s Presbytery. It is run by volunteers and is meant to give street people in the West End a genuine cafe experience which is free and friendly. FRIDAYS 6 PM AND SATURDAYS 1 PM it is run by the Simon Community. SUNDAYS 1 PM it is run by St Simon’s Congregation. Fresh soup and sandwiches are provided by the Buddhist Community, Peckham’s and others. Volunteers always welcome.

Supporting the disabled

The Wellbeing Initiative - Training project for adults with a physical disability in Administration and office skills. Also operates a Health and Disability Information Service.

Priesthill Volunteers and Disabled People - Project providing support to local people with a physical or learning disability. Also recruits volunteers to work within project.

Greater Pollok Carers Centre - Project offering support, information, advice and training to carers and their families living in the Greater Pollok area.

West Glasgow Carers Centre - Project offering support, information, advice and training to carers and their families living in the North and West of the city.

Befriending Services for young people

Anyone who knows of a young person who could use a little extra support for some reason can refer them to the service. Please contact Befriending Services at The Volunteer Centre for specific criteria. The permission of the family and young person is always required first.

We recruit, select, train and prepare adult volunteers and match them one to one with a young person. Their contact would average around 2 - 4 hours, once a week. The purpose is to build a relationship based on sharing activities and spending fun time together.

Befriending offers a unique experience for young people and volunteers, because a key feature of the arrangement is that the relationship which develops is a social, not a professional one.

As a result, some of the benefits for the young people are:

• A greater degree of self confidence and emotional growth
• A greater capacity to form and maintain relationships
• An enhanced ability to make use of their own personal resources and access wider community resources

The volunteers gain a great deal too. Apart from the knowledge that they are contributing positively to someone’s development (and the tremendous satisfaction that brings), they have the opportunity to engage in all kinds of activities. Sharing these with a young person brings a different perspective to the experience.

Most Befrienders maintain their commitment because of the personal gains alone. Some find the experience becomes a stepping stone to a career change or development. Many volunteers who have left us in the past have done so to take up training, further education or employment in a care environment.

Befriending poses a paradox. From the volunteer it requires total commitment - but only for a few hours once a week.
