REFURBISHMENT OF ST PETER’S Following the survey on the building conducted by the Archdiocese an open meeting for parishioners was held last Tuesday at which Mr Ken Crilley of the Archdiocese’s Estates Department illustrated with powerpoint the difficulties to which our 108 year old building is gradually falling prey. The professional advice expressed on the night was that there is nothing to be gained by the current practice of patching and mending when problems arise.
It was explained that public grants are available but that they have to be matched by the congregation although concern was expressed that grants are becoming more restricted. Feelings were expressed by those attending to the effect (1) there is no point in delaying and (2) there are enough people associated with St Peter’s to raise the necessary matching funds.
The total cost could be in the region of £1.5m. This would be broken up into phases with no time limit on final completion. The archdiocese’s proposal is to start with the replacing the roof which is coming to the end of its natural life at an estimated cost of about £600 000 with half to be raised by the congregation.
Confidence was expressed that St Peter’s could plan to raise an initial £300k. It was pointed out that this was the sum raised for the 2003 Centenary. The next meeting of the Parish Council is due on Monday 12 Sep and will be dedicated to gauging the parish’s response since the Archdiocese can do nothing until this is known. It will again be an open meeting to which all interested persons are invited. It will take place in the hall beginning 7 pm. The Dean, Canon Hill, has been invited since St Patrick’s has already managed to raise this kind of money.
